after your invitation, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Traveled to Peru to join his group of 38 States, 2022 has been and continues to be key to achieving this goal. The current scenario shows us that investment in science, technology and innovation (STI) is insufficient. Technological developments they limit an approach to the standards and good practices of the organization in question.
Regarding this, Concytec president Dr. Benjamín Marticorena and research director of the University of Technology and Engineering (UTEC), Dr. In an interview with Andina, Mónica Santa María Fuster stated: To achieve the goal, Peru, one of the member states of the OECD, should allocate a larger budgetary investment in science, technology and innovation, which will be rewarded in productivity, economic development and prosperity over time.
How much is Peru investing in technology?
Although there have been progressive and continuous increases in these investments in recent years, they are still not sufficient. To get an idea, Peru allocates 0.13% of its GDP to CTI, while our southern neighbor Chile invests 0.4% and most developed countries over 2%. In order to progress towards being a competitive economy, the first step is to reach 1% and eventually reach 2%, otherwise it will be difficult to diversify, develop new products, increase our efficiency, and we will have constant limitations.
By mid-2021, the aim is to set a national science policy, then implement it through CTI programs and universities, public research institutes, private companies, among others.
Foreign investment support
Although investment in Peru has not reached the levels of other countries in the region, a new US$100 million loan from the World Bank (WB) has been made since the beginning of this year to strengthen Sinacti so it can prioritize research, development and innovation in three key areas for the country : climate change, health and the digital economy.
However, there are still pending challenges in terms of innovation; therefore, a second loan of similar or higher amount is expected in the near future by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which aims to present a more attractive technological proposition. It facilitates the country’s entry into the OECD, thereby attracting future investments in the country.
How did we advance technologically?
In March, Concytec presented the methodology for the use of technological maturity levels (TRL) in research, development, innovation and entrepreneurship activities, where provisions intended to guide the adoption and dissemination of the technological maturity level methodology emerged. Technologies developed by researchers, technological managers and innovators of the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation in Peru (Sinacti) define the maturity stages of technologies developed in the country.
As of 2020, Concytec has actively participated in High Level meetings on science, technology and innovation and the Science and Technology Policy Committee (CSTP) meeting to work on collaborative projects, exchange information on best practices and advance core activities. The goal of joining the OECD
For example, digital growth
Currently, technological development and promotion of digital industries are delivering visible and positive results, so there are more companies and services offered through online media, sensing and adapting to the change in Peruvian consumers’ preferences. To do this, develop new tools that enable them to become innovation leaders in the region.
Digitization has become a valuable tool for many companies in Peru as it enables companies of all types to better connect with their customers. Similarly, businesses have a great opportunity to grow by adapting to current technological, sales and communication trends, to set an example for other competitors and to promote the sector in which they operate.
There are many technologists interested in being a part of this development and this is University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) In its educational offer, it has careers with well-known and expert teachers under an international standard curriculum with a great projection for the future.
